AAIB flags drug use by Air India pilot in Phuket-Delhi turbulence probe

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has released its preliminary report into last month's turbulence-hit Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi, confirming that the pilot-in-command had consumed drugs. The findings, made public on Friday, describe the development as a "serious concern" and have formally asked the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to initiate action.

The case came to light roughly a month ago when the same pilot failed a mandatory post-incident dope test. That test was conducted after the aircraft encountered severe turbulence during the sector, prompting a safety review.

While the AAIB's preliminary report does not specify the substance involved or the circumstances of its consumption, it is categorical that the commander's test results were positive. The bureau's recommendation to the DGCA signals that the matter now moves to the enforcement stage under India's civil aviation regulations.

This development adds to the scrutiny on cockpit discipline and substance-abuse protocols in Indian aviation, with the regulator expected to decide on penalties or suspension of the pilot's licence in the coming weeks.
