BJP, Akali Dal Student Wings Join Forces for Panjab University Polls
BJP's ABVP and Akali Dal's SOI have allied for Panjab University student council polls, a day before voting.
In a significant campus-level development, the student wings of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) have announced an electoral alliance for the Panjab University Campus Students' Council (PUCSC) elections. The announcement came just a day before polling is scheduled to take place.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), affiliated with the BJP, and the Students' Organisation of India (SOI), backed by the Akali Dal, have agreed to cooperate. As part of the understanding, the SOI will support ABVP candidates and mobilise its supporters in their favour.
This year, the SOI is not fielding a candidate for the presidential post after its nominee's application was rejected over an eligibility issue. With its own candidate out of the race, the SOI's decision to back the ABVP turns its organisational strength into a key factor in the final contest.
For the ABVP, the last-minute support from an established campus organisation could strengthen its campaign machinery and shift the electoral arithmetic, particularly in what is expected to be a closely fought presidential race.
The alliance holds a broader political subtext beyond the university. The parent parties have been signalling divergent positions amid ongoing speculation about their electoral equations in Punjab. While this campus tie-up does not confirm that the SAD and BJP have resolved their differences, it does highlight that tactical cooperation remains possible between their support networks.
Panjab University has long served as a political training ground, with its student elections often mirroring wider political currents in the state. The ABVP-SOI understanding, therefore, offers an early glimpse into how cadres associated with the two parties might respond when faced with a common electoral objective.
The immediate test will be Monday's polling. If the alliance successfully converts SOI's support into votes for ABVP, it could provide a decisive advantage. The outcome will add another layer to the ongoing question in Punjab politics: if their student wings can find common ground on campus, can the parent parties eventually do the same?
