AfD Celebrates 'Historic' Lead in Saxony-Anhalt as Exit Polls Close

Supporters of Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party gathered in Magdeburg on Saturday evening, celebrating exit poll projections that indicated a significant lead in the Saxony-Anhalt regional election.

Video footage from the event showed a jubilant crowd waving German flags and singing the national anthem. Björn Höcke, the party's regional leader, addressed the gathering, visibly emotional.

"I am deeply moved; my knees are shaking," Höcke said. "This is a historic event; looking back, the history of the Federal Republic of Germany will be divided by this turning point—a time before and a time after. The time after is called 'Normal Germany,' and we are now setting out on this path together."

Attendees echoed the sentiment, framing the projected result as validation of the party's campaign. Supporter Niklas Odendahl expressed confidence in the party's readiness to govern, specifically mentioning Ulrich Siegmund, a key figure in the regional branch.

"The AfD didn't go into this election unprepared," Odendahl said. "We have a claim to govern, and the AfD here in Saxony-Anhalt will carry out its duties well."

Another supporter, Michel Schneidermann, described the projected outcome as a reward for an "honest, concrete campaign that resonates with voters." He added, "It's clear what the people of Saxony-Anhalt want: an AfD government."

The mood at the gathering was celebratory, with attendees taking selfies and signs reading "Everything is possible" on display. The final results are still pending, but the exit polls have already energized the party's base, setting the stage for a significant political development in the state.
