The co-leader of Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has declared that the political 'firewall' erected by mainstream parties against his group is no longer tenable, following a state election on Sunday.
Tino Chrupalla, speaking to broadcaster ARD, asserted that the outcome in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt represents a definitive rejection of the long-standing policy by established parties to refuse any form of cooperation with the AfD.
"Those parties were voted out - or rather, the voters delivered a clear verdict - and I can only encourage them to recognize that the 'firewall' has been definitively rejected by the voters today," Chrupalla said, directly referencing the cordon sanitaire that mainstream political forces have maintained.
The comments come as projections from the election indicate significant gains for the AfD in the region, a traditional stronghold for the party. Chrupalla framed the result not merely as a numerical shift but as a clear political instruction from the electorate for established parties to abandon their stance of isolation.
