
Age Assurance Tech Becomes Key Front in Social Media Child Safety Push
Social media firms are ramping up age-checking tech to protect kids, using AI and selfies, amid privacy and accuracy concerns.
Social media companies are intensifying efforts to determine the ages of their users, a crucial step in child safety measures that are facing increased regulatory and public scrutiny. The push comes as part of a broader industry shift, with major platforms like Meta, Google, TikTok, and Roblox all working to better identify minors on their services.
A landmark legal settlement involving Meta, which resolves claims from state attorneys general that its platforms harmed children's mental health, places significant emphasis on age assurance. The agreement, involving 48 states and the District of Columbia, gives the company a year to refine its methods. The core challenge is that effective protections are useless if a platform cannot distinguish between adult and child users.
Traditional methods, such as government-issued IDs, are technically viable but raise privacy concerns. Many users are uncomfortable sharing sensitive documents like driver's licenses with large tech firms. Meta accepts such IDs but commits to deleting the data within 30 days.
In response, companies are turning to artificial intelligence. AI can estimate a user's age based on various clues, though it cannot verify a birth date. Google's YouTube uses AI to differentiate adults from minors based on watch history. Meta's Instagram analyzes "contextual clues" like posts about birthdays, friend networks, and login times. The AI also examines photos for visual cues, such as height or bone structure, to estimate a general age range.
Identity verification firms like Yoti and Persona work with platforms to estimate ages from video selfies. Roblox, which permits users under 13, requires a video selfie for users who wish to chat, with the videos deleted after processing. While the technology is often accurate, experts have noted potential reliability issues, particularly for women and certain racial or ethnic groups.
A separate debate centers on who should be responsible for age checks. Some platforms argue that app store owners like Apple and Google should verify ages before apps are downloaded. These companies counter that such a system would not cover desktop computers or pre-installed apps.
Critics of online age verification warn of a trend toward a less private and free internet. They argue that age-gating could restrict access to a wide range of content, from news to health information, and that every verification method requires users to hand over sensitive personal data that could be leaked or misused.
