Ahmedabad Airport Launches Hub-and-Spoke Model to Ease International Travel
Ahmedabad Airport's new hub-and-spoke facility streamlines international travel for Gujarat residents, with local check-in and customs clearance before transit via Delhi.
International travel from Gujarat is set to become significantly smoother with the launch of a Hub and Spoke facility at Ahmedabad Airport. The initiative, inaugurated by Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu and Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, was also attended by Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings.
Under this new framework, passengers originating from Ahmedabad can complete check-in, customs clearance, and immigration procedures locally before transiting through major hubs like Delhi. Checked luggage is tagged directly to the final destination, eliminating the need for terminal transfers, luggage re-checks, and duplicate security lines during layovers.
The facility connects Ahmedabad to 15 international destinations through two daily flights via Delhi, with a tight four-hour transit window and full 32 kg baggage allowance checks at the origin airport. Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol revealed that over 2,100 passengers have already benefited during the initial phase.
The initiative supports the central government's broader goals of connecting an additional 100 million passengers and upgrading 100 airports over the next decade. It also aligns with the UDAN scheme's objective of expanding air accessibility. Operational airports have grown from 74 in 2014 to 166 today, reflecting the shift from bus and rail reliance to modern air mobility.
Airlines such as Air India are already using the framework to feed regional passenger traffic into long-haul international networks, helping retain passengers within the Indian aviation system while optimising existing airport infrastructure.
For Gujarat's business ecosystem and global diaspora, the facility brings immediate advantages. Ahmedabad serves as a central trade hub with commercial links spanning the globe. Enhanced air connectivity is expected to directly power key state industries, including textiles, pharmaceuticals, diamond and gem trading, semiconductor manufacturing, and hospitality, while establishing vital infrastructure as Gujarat prepares for long-term growth and its bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
