AI to Fuel Space Tech Investment Boom Worth $100-200 Billion

IEEE report says AI will drive a space tech investment boom, with $100-200 billion in global opportunities over the next 5-10 years.

Artificial intelligence is set to catalyze a major expansion in space technology, creating a global investment opportunity estimated at $100-200 billion. This projection comes from a new report by the IEEE Future Directions Committee's Industry Advisory Board, developed with the IEEE Santa Clara Valley Section, IEEE Computer Society, and IEEE Industry Engagement.

The report identifies AI, energy, health, space, and physical AI as the five major technology megatrends. It notes that aggressive AI adoption has accelerated not only AI-related fields but also space technology, which is now poised for growth comparable to the AI boom itself.

Several signals support this outlook, including commercial investment, cheaper access to space, reusable rockets, autonomous space vehicles, and space-resource utilization. The report also highlights space-based solar or energy beams and the reopening of international space regulation as potential sector-shaping developments.

IEEE's framework envisions a "high volume orbital economy" emerging, covering areas such as orbital manufacturing and mining, the lunar economy, colonization, commercialization, and space resource utilization. Technologies like new materials, cleaner energy, advanced propulsion systems, and resource-minimal production are listed as requirements for this expansion.

Beyond traditional satellite applications, the report's risk-reward assessment points to asteroid mining, off-Earth manufacturing, space-based solar power, data centers in space, and software-defined space systems as avenues to broaden the economic scope of space. Asteroid mining and off-Earth manufacturing could provide access to rare materials and reshape global supply chains, while space-based solar power could offer continuous clean energy.

However, the report also flags significant challenges. Fragmented policy frameworks, crowded orbits, space debris, spectrum management issues, funding constraints, and shortages of engineering and operational skills could constrain growth.

Looking ahead 5-10 years, the report suggests space technologies could create new markets, high-skilled jobs, and business opportunities across agriculture, renewable energy, logistics, and digital services.
