AIADMK Functionary Arrested in Tirupattur Over Illegal Sand Mining

Kandali police arrested AIADMK youth wing secretary A. Srinivasan, 37, for illegal sand mining in the Palar River; he was lodged in Tirupattur sub-jail.

The Kandali police on Thursday arrested a 37-year-old AIADMK functionary in Tirupattur district in connection with illegal sand mining in the Palar River.

The accused has been identified as A. Srinivasan, youth wing secretary of the Kandali Panchayat Union unit of the AIADMK. He is married to S. Nandini, who serves as president of the Kakangarai village panchayat under the Kandali panchayat union.

A preliminary inquiry indicated that Srinivasan was allegedly involved in mining sand illegally from the dry Palar riverbed and from irrigation tanks in the surrounding areas. The sand is believed to have been supplied to private builders in the region at higher rates.

According to the police, the case was registered at the Kandali police station a few months ago on the basis of a complaint from panchayat officials. Srinivasan went into hiding after the case was filed, prompting the formation of special teams to trace him.

He was eventually picked up from a hideout within the district and subsequently lodged at the sub-jail in Tirupattur town. Investigations into the matter are continuing.
