Ballari farmers' body seeks immediate drought relief works
AIKKMS Ballari demands immediate drought relief works, loan waivers, and local employment for affected rural households.
The Ballari district committee of the All India Kisan Khet Majdoor Sangathan (AIKKMS) has called on the government to launch drought relief works in the district without further delay. The organisation said inadequate rainfall has created drought-like conditions, causing severe distress among farmers and agricultural labourers.
In a memorandum submitted to authorities on Friday, the committee noted that the slowdown in farming activity has sharply reduced rural employment opportunities. Families are struggling to meet basic needs, and many are being forced to migrate in search of work.
The AIKKMS has urged the government to increase the number of working days under relief schemes and ensure continuous employment for rural households. It also demanded timely payment of wages to workers.
Among its key demands are a complete waiver of farmers' bank loans, immediate declaration of Siruguppa taluk as drought-affected, and prompt disbursal of crop-loss compensation. The organisation also pressed for urgent action to tackle drinking water shortages and ensure adequate fodder for livestock.
The committee stressed that providing sustained local employment is essential to prevent migration and stabilise rural livelihoods in the district.
