AIMIM Expels MLC Baig After Viral Video Row; BJP Demands Probe

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has expelled its MLC Mirza Rehmath Baig from the party following a controversy triggered by a viral video and allegations circulating on social media. The party cited "indiscipline" as the reason for the removal.
Baig, who is considered close to AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, was removed amid reports that a complaint was filed with the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police. The complaint reportedly relates to the viral video and allegations that Baig was being threatened or blackmailed.
The development has drawn sharp reactions from the opposition. Telangana BJP has demanded an independent investigation into the matter, calling for either a court-monitored probe or an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
BJP state chief spokesperson N V Subash said that expulsion from a political party does not substitute for a criminal investigation. "When allegations involve offences against women and minors, the only acceptable response is a thorough, impartial and time-bound investigation," he said, while also questioning the timing of the expulsion and the reported cybercrime complaint.
Hyderabad's Goshamehal MLA T Raja Singh questioned the circumstances surrounding Baig's removal. He alleged that Baig was called back from Saudi Arabia while performing Umrah and asked to resign at midnight. Singh demanded that Owaisi explain the reasons behind the suspension and resignation, and called for the facts to be placed before the public.
Singh also referred to unverified social media allegations concerning sexual offences, land disputes, and alleged intimidation. He questioned whether other AIMIM representatives were facing similar allegations.
Baig's political career began as a driver for an AIMIM legislator before he rose to prominence. In February 2023, Owaisi announced him as the party's candidate for the Hyderabad Local Authorities MLC seat. Baig was elected unopposed and became a member of the Telangana Legislative Council later that year.
