From Odisha Village to Civil Service: Aishwarya Pradhan's Journey

Aishwarya Rutuparna Pradhan's path from a small village in Odisha to government service has been defined by education, persistence and the decision to live openly by her identity.

Born as Ratikant Pradhan in Kanabagiri village in Kandhamal district, she has described facing questions and discrimination over her gender identity from an early age. Remarks from teachers and those around her made her school years difficult at times, but she stayed focused on her studies and goals.

After school, Aishwarya moved to Bhubaneswar for higher education. She completed a postgraduate degree in Public Administration and later studied English Journalism at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication. Her college and hostel years brought their own challenges, including jokes and discrimination because of her identity, yet she continued her education and worked towards a career in public service. Her mother and sister supported her as she came to terms with her identity and pursued her ambitions.

April 2014 marked an important turning point. She began publicly expressing her identity and started wearing sarees, a decision that drew questions and reactions but which she stood by.

She had earlier cleared the Odisha Financial Service examination in 2010 and went on to work as a Commercial Tax Officer. Her story has drawn attention for increasing the visibility of transgender people in government service, with media reports describing her as the country's first transgender IAS officer.

Her journey highlights the role of education and determination in overcoming social barriers, and stands as an account of someone who continued to pursue her goals despite facing discrimination over her gender identity.
