Action star Alan Ritchson is in negotiations to take the lead in Sony Pictures' feature adaptation of the video game franchise Helldivers, with Justin Lin attached to direct. The move comes after Jason Momoa stepped away from the project, prompting the studio and filmmaker to move quickly on a replacement.
The film draws on the Helldivers series created by Arrowhead Game Studios. Plot details for the adaptation remain under wraps.
The franchise began in 2015 as a cooperative twin-stick shooter in which players join an elite unit tasked with defending Super Earth and battling humanity's enemies across an intergalactic war. Its sequel puts players in the role of Helldivers, described as an elite class of soldiers spreading peace, liberty and Managed Democracy with the most powerful weapons available.
The project continues a partnership between Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, which previously collaborated on Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. That film grossed 407 million USD worldwide and ranks among the ten highest-grossing video game adaptations globally.
Ritchson is currently appearing in the fourth season of his Amazon Prime series Reacher.
