Ali Asgari Brings 'Kami Nour' to Venice, His Third Festival Outing
Iranian director Ali Asgari returns to the Venice Film Festival with 'Kami Nour', a competition entry about a doctor who loses faith after his arrest.
Iranian filmmaker Ali Asgari is back at the Venice International Film Festival for a third time, bringing his latest feature, "Kami Nour" ("A Bit of Light"), to the Lido.
The film centres on an Iranian doctor who, after being arrested and having his medical practice shut down, begins to lose his faith and contemplates suicide. It stars Misagh Zareh, Sadaf Asgari, Forouzan Jamshidnejad, Ramtin Daghigh and Mina Rahimzadeh.
"Kami Nour" is Asgari's sixth feature, arriving after "Disappearance." It will screen in competition at the 83rd edition of the festival, which opens on September 2.
Speaking about the film's themes, Asgari said it is not a work about sorrow but about the unseen ties that give people a reason to keep going. He described how, in Iran, where economic hardship, political uncertainty and the threat of war have become part of daily life, he has watched people continue to look after one another and carve out small moments of hope.
The cast discussed the film and the wider pressures facing Iranian cinema during a press event in Venice on 11 September.
