Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has confirmed he will remain on the bench for the upcoming term, putting an end to weeks of intense speculation about a possible retirement. The 76-year-old justice made the remarks in a rare interview from his chambers, published Friday.
"Obviously, I'm here for another term," Alito said, directly addressing the rumors that have swirled around his future.
The speculation reached a peak in June after a veteran Supreme Court reporter at National Public Radio mistakenly published a pre-written retirement story. The piece was quickly retracted, and the court confirmed the information was inaccurate. However, the incident fueled widespread discussion about whether Alito might step down, a move that would have allowed President Donald Trump to nominate a fourth justice to the court.
In the interview, Alito also pushed back against the notion that political partisanship influences his judicial decisions. He insisted his votes are based solely on his interpretation of the law, regardless of the political consequences.
"I vote in every case the way I think the case should be decided," he said. "If that means a high correlation with what Trump wants, fine. If it means zero correlation with what Trump wants, fine as well."
Alito's confirmation removes a major variable from the court's immediate future, ensuring its current ideological balance remains intact for the next session.
