Allahabad HC rebukes DM for NSA action against law student's protest

The Allahabad High Court has strongly criticised a District Magistrate for invoking the National Security Act (NSA) against a law student, describing the official's conduct as "worthy of derision".

The court was hearing a petition challenging the preventive detention of the student, who had participated in a public demonstration in support of workers.

In its observations, the High Court noted that the District Magistrate appeared to have "desired to set an example" out of the petitioner. The court said the underlying intent seemed to be to deter others from exercising their constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of speech and expression in public spaces.
