Amazon Cargo Jet Overshoots Miami Runway, Killing Five on Ground
An Amazon cargo jet overshot a Miami runway, killing five and injuring two. Investigators are probing the cause.
Federal investigators are working to determine why an Amazon cargo jet overshot a runway at Miami International Airport, resulting in a deadly crash that killed five people on the ground.
The Boeing 767, which had just landed, veered off the runway on Sunday and struck a van carrying a cleaning crew on airport property. The force of the impact carried the aircraft through a perimeter fence and into an SUV traveling on a public street.
Five occupants of the van died at the scene, while two others survived. The aircraft's pilot and co-pilot also escaped with their lives.
National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy described the crash site as "utter devastation." The wreckage, including the jet and the mangled van, remained in place as investigators combed through evidence.
The incident has caused widespread disruption at the airport, with hundreds of flights delayed or canceled. By late Tuesday, however, only one of the airport's four runways remained closed, suggesting that flight schedules may begin to return to normal soon.
