Amazon Cargo Plane Overshoots Miami Runway, Killing Five
An Amazon cargo plane overshot a runway at Miami airport, killing five and injuring several others after striking vehicles and catching fire.
At least five people are dead after an Amazon cargo plane overshot a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon, slamming into vehicles and bursting into flames, according to local officials.
The aircraft, arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, ran off the runway around 2 p.m. and came to rest on its belly near a roadway beside two semi-trucks. Emergency crews found the plane engulfed in fire and worked to extinguish the flames while tending to the injured.
Miami-Dade County officials said three people were critically injured and two others were hospitalized with less severe wounds. Some victims were trapped inside vehicles, and the pilot and co-pilot were also trapped in the aircraft, according to Miami-Dade Rescue Fire Chief Ray Jadallah.
More than 60 fire rescue units responded to the scene. Hours after the crash, crews were still dealing with a fuel leak from the plane. Images from the scene showed the aircraft largely intact despite the fire, resting on its belly beside the road.
The cause of the incident is under investigation. The plane was operated under Amazon's Prime Air cargo service.
