At least five people were killed on Sunday when an Amazon Prime Air cargo flight crashed while attempting to land at Miami International Airport, according to local officials. The aircraft, operating as Prime Air Flight 7598, overshot a diagonal runway just before 2 p.m. EDT and struck multiple vehicles on the ground.
Five additional people were injured in the incident, with three reported to be in critical condition. The crash prompted the immediate closure of all runways and taxiways at the airport as of 3 p.m. EDT. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned travelers to expect significant delays and potential cancellations.
The aircraft, a Boeing 767-300, had departed from San Juan, Puerto Rico, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The flight was operated by cargo airline 21 Air on behalf of Amazon. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the company is gathering details and working closely with local authorities to understand what happened, stating that the priority is the safety and well-being of everyone involved.
Photographs from the scene showed the jet with its nose on the ground and its tail tilted upward, with scorch marks visible on the right side of the fuselage. The FAA has announced it will investigate the crash. The cargo airline has not yet responded to requests for comment.
