Amritsar ASI murder: suspect killed in police encounter, second man at large
A suspect in the killing of ASI Harjit Singh was shot dead in an encounter with Amritsar police, who are still hunting for a second man.
A man accused of involvement in the murder of an assistant sub-inspector was killed in an exchange of fire with police in Amritsar, officials said.
Deepak Singh, a resident of Mulechak village in the district, was killed on Saturday night. Police identified him as one of two motorcycle-borne men who shot dead ASI Harjit Singh at the Bhagtanwala grain market on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.
According to the police, the accused were traced using CCTV footage, technical inputs, tower-dump analysis, local intelligence and human sources.
On Saturday, officers signalled two men riding a scooter to stop at a checkpoint at about 9.45 pm. One of them allegedly opened fire at the police team and fled towards another checkpoint, where the pair allegedly fired four rounds at the police. Officers returned fire in self-defence, officials said.
Deepak Singh was hit during the exchange in the Islamabad police station area and was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries. The second suspect escaped, and police said efforts were under way to arrest him.
One pistol, two magazines and eight cartridges were recovered from the spot, officials added.
