Malayalam University scholar calls off 24-day protest after assurances
Research scholar Anagha Sasi ended her 24-day protest after Malayalam University assured action on her demands, including a doctoral committee meeting.
Anagha Sasi, a research scholar at Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University, has called off her 24-day indefinite protest. The decision came after the university administration assured her that her demands would be taken up for consideration.
As part of the understanding, the university has agreed to convene a meeting of her doctoral committee, provide the academic facilities required for her research work, and initiate legal action on the complaints she has raised.
Ms. Sasi, who is pursuing research in the Department of Environmental Studies, had launched the stir alleging caste-based discrimination, harassment, and academic denial within the institution. She claimed that she was subjected to caste-based abuse by teachers and was assigned menial chores such as sweeping classrooms, dusting books and files, carrying boxes, and cleaning laboratory equipment.
She also alleged that she was denied research support and essential academic facilities, and that her grievances submitted over the past two years had not led to any effective resolution. The university had previously dismissed her allegations as baseless.
