Veteran actor Anant Nag will be conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024, the government announced on Wednesday. The award is the highest recognition in Indian cinema.
The 78-year-old has appeared in more than 250 films over five decades, building a career across Kannada and Hindi cinema as well as theatre. His notable works include Minchina Ota, Hamsageethe, Ankur and Manthan.
The honour will be presented at the National Film Awards ceremony in Kevadia, Gujarat, on September 22.
Announcing the decision, the Press Information Bureau said the award recognises the actor's contribution to Indian cinema and a cinematic journey that has inspired generations. The selection was made on the recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Nag, saying his performances over several decades had left a strong mark on Indian cinema, particularly Kannada cinema. In a post on X, he said the actor brought rare depth and authenticity to every role he played, calling the honour richly deserved for a truly distinguished artist.
