Anderon Secures $1 Billion CHIPS Award to Scale Quantum Wafer Manufacturing

Anderon, an IBM company, has finalized a $1 billion CHIPS and Science Act award with the U.S. Department of Commerce to accelerate quantum wafer manufacturing R&D.

Anderon LLC, an IBM company, has finalized a $1 billion award under the CHIPS and Science Act with the U.S. Department of Commerce, the company announced on Wednesday. The funding is intended to accelerate the company's research and development work on quantum wafer manufacturing capabilities in the United States.

The award follows a letter of intent signed between the department and IBM in May. Anderon, headquartered in Albany, New York, operates a 300-millimeter pure-play quantum wafer foundry and is backed by an additional $1 billion investment from IBM.

"This agreement with the Department of Commerce strengthens our ability to deliver the manufacturing scale the quantum industry needs," said Mukesh Khare, CEO of Anderon. "We're building a foundation that will let quantum move from research breakthroughs to real-world impact."

IBM Research director and IBM Fellow Jay Gambetta said the company's quantum roadmap depends on a manufacturing base that can scale at the pace its work requires, adding that Anderon's wafer fabrication focus supports that goal.

The foundry supplies specialized wafers for high-performance superconducting qubit arrays, quantum input/output signaling, and readout signal chain components — capabilities that underpin a range of quantum architectures. Anderon said it plans to expand into other quantum modalities in the future.

The company has already begun running its first quantum wafers through the manufacturing facility, an early operational milestone that it said demonstrates its ability to translate advanced pre-production research into commercial-grade quantum wafer technologies.

Quantum computing is expected to drive advances in fields such as materials science, chemistry, optimization, and cybersecurity. As the technology moves toward large-scale commercial use, scalable manufacturing is seen as essential to realizing its potential. Anderon's production-scale fab is positioned to support domestic supply chains and the growth of the broader quantum ecosystem.
