With the El Nino weather pattern threatening to bring dry conditions, the Andhra Pradesh government has directed its ministers, elected representatives, and officials to visit agricultural fields and guide farmers on suitable alternative crops. The directive aims to ensure that not a single acre of farmland is left dry or unproductive during the anticipated shortfall in rainfall.
Chief Minister has instructed the administration to prepare a contingency plan that includes stocking 90,000 kilograms of seeds for less water-intensive crops. These seeds will be distributed to farmers as part of a broader strategy to mitigate the impact of a weak monsoon. The state government has allocated ₹90 crore for seed subsidy to support this initiative.
The move is part of a proactive approach to safeguard the kharif season and protect farmers' livelihoods. By promoting crops that require less water, the government hopes to reduce the risk of crop failure and ensure some yield even under stressed conditions. Officials have been asked to work closely with local communities to ensure the advice reaches every farmer in time.
