Andhra Pradesh unveils incentives to accelerate EV adoption

Andhra Pradesh is pushing electric mobility with buyer subsidies, road tax exemptions, and charging infrastructure incentives under its 2024-29 policy.

The Andhra Pradesh government is intensifying its push for electric mobility, with Transport Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy outlining a series of incentives under the state's Sustainable Electric Mobility Policy for 2024-29.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, the Minister said the policy extends support to both manufacturers and buyers. Purchasers of electric two-wheelers, autos, buses, transport vehicles, and tractors are eligible for a subsidy of up to 5% of the ex-showroom price. This purchase incentive will remain applicable until March 2027.

To make EV ownership more attractive, the state is also offering a five-year exemption from road tax for electric vehicles registered in Andhra Pradesh.

On the infrastructure front, the government is incentivizing the setup of the first 5,000 charging stations across the state. Investors can claim a subsidy of up to 25% of the installation cost, capped at ₹3 lakh per station.

The Minister cited national sales data to underscore the sector's momentum, noting that around 2.98 lakh electric vehicles were sold across India in August, a 52.9% increase year-on-year. He added that EVs now account for 12.3% of the overall vehicle market, up from 9.5%.

Looking ahead, the state aims to promote 2 lakh electric two-wheelers, at least 10,000 electric three-wheelers, and 20,000 new electric cars by 2029. Plans also include expanding EV use in public transportation and establishing a charging station every 30 km.

Further measures such as developing e-mobility cities and supporting startups are part of the strategy. "The government is committed to transforming Andhra Pradesh into a leading state in the electric mobility sector in the country," Mr. Reddy said.
