Andhra Pradesh Clears Rs 730.7 Crore Quantum-AI University in Amaravati
Andhra Pradesh approves a Rs 730.7 crore Quantum and AI university in Amaravati, developed by NIELIT, to train 8,250 learners in five years.
The Andhra Pradesh government has given its approval for a dedicated Quantum and Artificial Intelligence university campus in Amaravati, with a projected investment of Rs 730.7 crore. The project, to be developed by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), is slated to come up on an 8.5-acre site. The funding will be provided entirely through central government grants over a five-year period.
The new institution is designed to function as an integrated hub, bringing together education, research, semiconductor technology, start-ups, and advanced skill development under one roof. The curriculum will extend beyond traditional computer science, covering quantum computing, quantum communication and security, AI and machine learning, data science, semiconductor fabrication, chip design, VLSI, embedded systems, and high-performance computing.
Academic offerings will span undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, diploma, and executive programmes. The first batch of courses is expected to commence in September 2026. However, initial instruction will take place at a temporary facility at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur while the permanent campus is under construction.
A key component of the project is the Quantum Research, Innovation and Incubation Block, which will span approximately 1.2-1.25 lakh square feet. This facility will house infrastructure for quantum computing, quantum photonics, quantum security, cryogenic systems, and high-performance computing. It will also include cleanroom and nano-fabrication facilities, semiconductor technology infrastructure, chip-design facilities, data centres, and dedicated space for start-ups, aiming to bridge the gap between research and commercial application.
The project is expected to train around 8,250 learners in its first five years, with 1,650 in formal degree programmes and 6,600 in skilling and certification courses. By the fifth year, the annual intake is projected to reach approximately 3,913 learners. The permanent campus will feature smart classrooms, laboratories, hostels, and a 500-bed residential facility, along with sustainable infrastructure such as solar power generation, solar water heating, EV charging, and scientific waste-management systems.
The initiative aligns with national missions including the National Quantum Mission, IndiaAI Mission, and India Semiconductor Mission. NIELIT plans to collaborate with institutions such as IIT Tirupati, IIIT Sri City, Andhra University, and JNTU institutions for academic and research programmes.
