Driver's trial in Anthony Joshua crash case pushed to November 17

A magistrate court in Ogun State has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver charged in connection with the December 2025 crash that injured boxer Anthony Joshua and killed two members of his team, to November 17.

The proceedings, which opened in January, had been listed for September 10 before the adjournment was granted.

Kayode, 46, faces charges including dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and operating a vehicle without a valid national driver's licence.

Prosecutors allege that Kayode was attempting to overtake another vehicle when the SUV carrying Joshua and his team collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Joshua, a two-time world heavyweight champion, was injured in the December 29 crash and was later discharged from care. His personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, died in the collision. The group had been travelling to visit Joshua's father in Ogun State.

In earlier hearings, police told the court that both vehicles had been removed from the scene before investigators arrived.

Speaking outside the court, defence counsel Abiodun Olalekan said the matter carried weight beyond Nigeria, describing it as a case that tests confidence in the legal system. He added that his client's liberty was at stake and that the repeated court appearances were affecting the defendant's ability to earn a living for his family.

Abdulrazaq Mogaji, counsel for a second defendant, said the adjournments were burdensome for his client, a driver who must set aside his work to attend each sitting and avoid being deemed to have jumped bail.
