Andhra Pradesh extends ₹33.15 lakh relief to family of electrocuted municipal worker
Andhra Pradesh has extended ₹33.15 lakh in assistance to the family of Vundi Anil Kumar, an APCOS welder electrocuted on duty in the Mangalagiri-Tadepalli Municipal Corporation limits.
The Andhra Pradesh Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department has extended financial assistance totalling ₹33.15 lakh to the family of Vundi Anil Kumar, an APCOS welder who died after being electrocuted while on duty within the Mangalagiri-Tadepalli Municipal Corporation limits.
Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar handed over a cheque for ₹28 lakh towards insurance benefits to the bereaved family on Friday. The amount comprised ₹20 lakh under the Personal Accident Insurance scheme and ₹8 lakh as education support for the deceased employee's two children.
The Municipal Corporation had earlier released ₹5 lakh as ex gratia along with ₹15,000 towards funeral expenses, bringing the total assistance to ₹33.15 lakh.
Anil Kumar, 51, had served as an APCOS welder since April 2010 and was posted at Nulakapeta in Tadepalli. He was electrocuted on June 12, 2026, and died. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.
Suresh Kumar said the case underscored the need for a robust social security framework for outsourcing and frontline municipal workers. Around 35,000 municipal workers across urban local bodies in the State have been enrolled under the salary-linked insurance protection scheme so far, and eight workers who died under different circumstances have received insurance benefits amounting to about ₹80 lakh.
The department is also promoting health and accident protection among municipal workers and has asked Municipal Commissioners to build awareness about the benefits available and the procedures for filing claims.
