AR Rahman Backs Kashmir Film Festival as Global Cinema Destination

Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman has thrown his weight behind the International Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir, describing the Valley as a beautiful and blessed place and calling the event a commendable initiative.

Speaking in Srinagar, Rahman said the festival would allow visitors from around the world to experience Kashmir's scenery, culture and hospitality. He expressed hope that it would grow into a globally recognised event and eventually rank among the best film festivals in India.

The composer, who is in the Valley for an advertisement shoot that has just been completed, said Kashmir's peaceful and inspiring surroundings make it an ideal destination for filmmakers and artistes in search of creative stimulus.

Rahman also indicated that he is exploring future projects in the region, including a possible live performance. "Yes, we have some plans, and we are talking. Hopefully, I want to come and perform here," he said.

Asked whether Bollywood should increasingly use Kashmir as a filming location, Rahman said the industry ought to project the Valley's beauty and tranquillity. He argued that nature should be portrayed as a positive force rather than through narratives of violence or the past, adding that the future is bright.

On the question of greater collaboration with local talent, Rahman welcomed the idea and recalled recording folk songs by women singers in Kashmir for the film Rockstar. He said he wants to return to do more work with artistes in the region.

He compared the Kashmir festival's potential with established events such as the London Film Festival, Sundance and Amsterdam's festival, saying the current edition marks a strong beginning.
