Argentine-Greek Duo Wins Tango World Championship Salon Category

An Argentine-Greek duo, Lucas Gauto and Naima Gerasopoulou, clinched the top prize in the salon category at the Tango World Championship held at the Gran Rex Theater in Buenos Aires on Tuesday. The pair's victory was sealed amid applause, falling confetti, and emotional embraces, as they lifted the trophy before a packed auditorium and a global online audience.

For Gauto, the win marked the realization of a long-held ambition. "A dream from twenty years ago, coming to the World Cup for the first time... it was incredible when they said my name," he said.

Gerasopoulou, who began dancing in Greece, recalled her initial encounter with tango. "When I started in Greece, I didn't even know what tango was. What drove me crazy about tango was feeling a sincere embrace from a person I had never met in my life," she explained.

The competition drew finalists from countries including Russia, Turkey, Japan, Indonesia, and Kazakhstan, underscoring tango's global appeal. Competitors described the dance as a deeply personal means of expression and cross-cultural connection.

South Korea's London Hong and Solange Jung secured third place. Hong expressed gratitude for the experience, noting that the event is a chance to learn about tango's culture and roots. "It's always a learning experience and this is just the cherry on top," she said, adding that tango "really defines who we are."
