Armed Man Lunges at Ohio Democratic Candidate Amy Acton at Fair, Injuring Several

An armed assailant lunged at Amy Acton, the Democratic candidate for Ohio governor, during a campaign stop at the Canfield Fair on Sunday, injuring several people, according to campaign officials.

The suspect knocked volunteers to the ground and was arrested with "multiple weapons," said Chris Anderson, chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party. Acton was not injured, but multiple people were hurt, the campaign said.

Addie Bullock, Acton's communications director, said Acton is "grateful for the swift and decisive action of law enforcement and are praying for the recovery of those injured. This kind of violence has no place in Ohio. Dr. Acton will always stand up to the chaos, hate and vitriol that pits us against one another."

Acton, the state's former public health director, is running against Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, who has used his national profile and ties to President Donald Trump to build a large fundraising advantage. Ramaswamy's communications director, Connie Luck, called the incident "completely unacceptable" and said it "has no place in politics," adding that they hope no one was hurt.

The fairground's police department referred inquiries to the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department, which did not immediately return a message seeking comment. The Ohio State Highway Patrol also did not immediately respond to a request for information.
