Guadagnino's Altman Drama 'Artificial' to Premiere at New York Film Festival

Luca Guadagnino's upcoming drama 'Artificial' will make its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival, according to reports. The film, which centers on OpenAI founder Sam Altman, is scheduled to debut on October 5 at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall.

The movie stars Andrew Garfield as Altman and depicts the period when the tech executive was briefly ousted from the AI company before being reinstated. Monica Barbaro plays OpenAI's chief technology officer Mira Murati, while Yura Borisov portrays co-founder Ilya Sutskever. Ike Barinholtz appears as Elon Musk, with additional cast members including Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, and Chris O'Dowd.

Neon acquired the nearly completed film after Amazon MGM dropped it. Producers include David Heyman, Jeffrey Clifford, Guadagnino, Jennifer Fox, and Simon Rich.

NYFF artistic director Dennis Lim praised the film's approach, noting it finds the right tone to explore how society arrived at the current AI moment, blending dark humor with existential urgency.

Following its New York debut, 'Artificial' will screen at the BFI London Film Festival on October 11. The festival runs from September 25 through October 12 and also features James Gray's 'Paper Tiger,' Ava DuVernay's '14th,' Tony Gilroy's 'Behemoth!,' and Takashi Yamazaki's 'Godzilla Minus Zero.'
