Artificial Trailer: Garfield Plays Sam Altman in Guadagnino's AI Drama

Trailer released for Luca Guadagnino's 'Artificial,' starring Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman amid the 2023 OpenAI boardroom drama.

The first trailer for Luca Guadagnino's upcoming film 'Artificial' has been released, offering a glimpse into the high-stakes drama surrounding the sudden ouster and swift reinstatement of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in 2023.

Andrew Garfield steps into the role of Altman, navigating the pressures of the global AI arms race. The film features a notable ensemble cast, with Ike Barinholtz portraying Elon Musk, Monica Barbaro as former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, and Yura Borisov as former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. Mark Rylance appears as Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton, with additional roles played by Jason Schwartzman, Zosia Mamet, Cooper Hoffman, Chris O'Dowd, Cooper Koch, and Billie Lourd.

The project, written by Simon Rich, has had a turbulent path to the screen. Amazon MGM Studios, which had originally planned a worldwide release, dropped the film earlier this year after signing a major partnership with OpenAI. Following passes from Netflix, A24, and Focus Features, Neon acquired distribution rights.

Directed by Guadagnino and produced by a team including David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford, 'Artificial' is scheduled for a theatrical release this Christmas. Given its timely subject matter and the controversy surrounding its production, the film is already generating awards-season buzz.
