Asian Schools Step Up Safety Drills to Tackle New Emergency Realities

Schools across Asia are intensifying their focus on safety and emergency preparedness through coordinated drills and lockdown exercises. The initiatives come in response to a growing recognition that educational institutions must be ready for a spectrum of threats, from human-induced violence to natural calamities.

In the Philippines, students in San Rafael, Bulacan province, took part in the Nationwide Simultaneous School Safety Drill. The exercise simulated a full-scale lockdown scenario, bringing together education officials, local government units, and emergency response agencies to test coordination and reaction protocols.

Department of Education Undersecretary Malcolm Garma highlighted the importance of readiness, noting past incidents in the country have exposed gaps in response capabilities. "Through this exercise, we want our schools to be aware, to be able to recognize these kinds of threats and to respond through drills and exercises: what to do, where to go, and how responders would be able to perform their roles," he said.

The drill was followed by a review and evaluation involving the Office of Civil Defense, the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Philippine National Police.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla described the preparations as a necessary adaptation to current circumstances. "It's a new reality in the country. We are preparing for all kinds of emergencies, from human-induced to weather-induced events. All of us should be ready," he stated.

Meanwhile, in Thailand, schools are also adopting similar preparedness measures. Footage from a Bangkok school showed police and responders coaching students on how to barricade doors and react during an active shooter situation. The drills follow a deadly shooting in Nonthaburi Province, which prompted the government to pledge stricter gun control measures. Thailand, despite restrictive gun laws, has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in Asia, and recent incidents have amplified calls for tighter regulation.
