Sarma Lays Foundation for 3,200 MW Adani Thermal Plant in Dhubri

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday laid the foundation stone for Adani Power's 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project in Dhubri district, describing it as a landmark for the state's power sector and its investment landscape.
The ceremony was attended by Jeet Adani, a director of the Adani Group. The project carries an investment of around Rs 48,000 crore and is being described as the largest private investment in Assam so far.
Speaking about the project, Sarma said it would be the biggest power plant not only in Assam but across the entire Northeast. He said the Adani Group had taken a bold decision in setting up the facility.
The Chief Minister said the plant would help transform Assam from a power-deficit state into a power-surplus one, and that average power costs in the state were expected to fall by about one rupee once the project is commissioned.
Sarma said the investment carried significance beyond electricity generation, and indicated that the state government would work with the Adani Group on further projects. He added that Assam was likely to be an important investment destination for the group in the coming years.
According to the Chief Minister, Assam is pursuing an energy strategy that pairs thermal capacity with green power. While thermal plants are being built for cost stability, the state is also developing hydel and pumped storage projects, a sector in which private investment is flowing in.
He said the state's geography makes it well suited to pumped storage projects, and that the long-term aim is to ensure adequate power for industries and investors. Sarma said he expected Assam to reach a position where it can supply power to everyone looking to invest in the state.
