Assam Cabinet Approves Rs 50,000-Crore Development Framework
Assam Cabinet clears Rs 50,000-crore development package spanning seven years, covering schools, Anganwadis, women's markets, stadiums, and tea worker housing.
The Assam Cabinet has formally approved the framework for a Rs 50,000-crore development package, first announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Independence Day. The seven-year programme, slated to begin in 2027 and run through 2034, will be implemented in phases across multiple sectors.
A significant portion of the outlay is earmarked for public infrastructure. Around Rs 700 crore has been set aside to upgrade nearly 1,000 high schools across the state. The plan also includes the construction of approximately 6,000 new Anganwadi centres, replacing older facilities to improve services for children and mothers.
The financing structure relies on two main sources. Roughly Rs 30,000 crore is proposed to be mobilised through NABARD funding, for which the Cabinet has approved a Memorandum of Understanding. The remaining Rs 20,000 crore is expected to come from the state government's own resources, primarily through higher revenue collection.
Constituency-level projects form a key part of the package. The government plans to establish two women-focused markets in every Assembly constituency, along with one stadium per constituency and additional stadiums at the district level. Auditoriums are also proposed for each Assembly constituency.
The package also incorporates the earlier announced scheme to provide Rs 1.5 lakh for house construction for tea garden workers. Overall, the programme brings together projects in education, social infrastructure, sports, housing, and other public facilities, with implementation scheduled to commence in 2027.
