Assam CM Announces 100 Scholarships for IIT Guwahati Students

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has proposed a scholarship scheme for 100 students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati. The announcement was made during the institute's 33rd foundation day programme held on September 1.

Speaking at the event, Sarma emphasised that IIT Guwahati's role goes beyond academics, describing it as a symbol of ambition for the people of Assam and the wider Northeast region. He requested the institute's director and relevant authorities to develop a framework to implement the scholarship initiative.

In a video shared on his official X handle, the Chief Minister said, "I propose that Assam government wants to institute 100 scholarships for the students of IIT Guwahati." He also expressed confidence that IIT Guwahati would be at the forefront of addressing complex technological and developmental challenges faced by the state.

In a separate post addressed to students, Sarma offered a motivational message: "Life is not a race, even if you don't run fast, it's absolutely okay, you won't be a broken Anda."

Sarma also recalled that the establishment of an IIT in Assam was a key demand during the Assam Accord. IIT Guwahati was eventually set up in 1994, 43 years after the country's first IIT was established at Kharagpur.
