Congress Convoy Attacked in Assam's Nagaon Ahead of By-Election
Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi and Bhupesh Baghel's vehicles were attacked with stones and bottles in Nagaon, Assam, while travelling to an election meeting.
A convoy carrying senior Congress leaders, including Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, was attacked with stones and bottles in Assam's Nagaon district on Monday. The incident occurred near the Borma area of Samaguri as the leaders were travelling to an election meeting in the Lorimukh area in support of party candidate Sibamoni Bora, ahead of the October 6 Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election.
The Congress has alleged that BJP workers waved black flags, raised "Go Back" slogans, and threw stones at the vehicles. A police complaint has been filed in connection with the incident, and Assam Police sources confirmed that the attack took place.
Gogoi said the vehicle in which he, Baghel, and candidate Sibamoni Bora were seated was targeted, and that glass was shattered and windows broken. He added that AICC secretary Manoj Chauhan sustained injuries after a stone struck him inside the vehicle. Gogoi also claimed that Bora had not been provided security.
Baghel said the convoy was attacked twice — once while heading to the meeting and again while returning. He alleged that no security was provided to the convoy and criticised the police administration's response.
Gogoi further alleged that the Assam Police were instructed not to intervene, and claimed that Congress leaders and workers had alerted the authorities about the possibility of such a situation since the previous night. He also shared photographs of the damaged vehicle.
The attack comes amid campaigning for the Nagaon by-election, with the Congress alleging that the incident reflects a deteriorating political culture in the state.
