Former Nagaon Collector, Two Journalists Join BJP Ahead of Assam Bypoll
Ex-Nagaon collector Debasish Sharma and two journalists joined the BJP on Tuesday, days before the Nagaon bypoll.
Debasish Sharma, the former District Collector of Nagaon, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, along with senior journalists Lenin Saurav Bora and Gunjan Kalita. The induction took place at a party event in Assam, marking a significant political development just days before the Nagaon assembly bypoll.
The move has triggered speculation about whether Sharma could be fielded as the party's candidate in the upcoming election. Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia, who attended the event, highlighted Sharma's administrative background and his deep roots in the state's social and cultural fabric.
"His life is dedicated to the people of Assam," Saikia said, describing the former bureaucrat as a sensitive person committed to public service. He added that Sharma's experience across cultural, social, and administrative spheres would strengthen the party.
Addressing questions about a possible ticket, Saikia clarified that Sharma had not formally sought one before joining. He noted that the party already has a panel of candidates under consideration, with election-related discussions underway. However, he did not rule out the possibility of considering Sharma if a request came from him or from local supporters in Nagaon.
The joining ceremony was attended by several senior BJP leaders, including Cabinet Ministers Piyush Hazarika, Jayanta Malla Baruah, and Kaushik Rai, as well as Nagaon MLA Rupak Sharma. The induction comes as political activity intensifies in the constituency, with all parties ramping up their preparations for the contest.
