Three of Assam Family Killed in Guwahati Landslide, Teen Son Rescued

Three members of a family died after a landslide hit their house in Guwahati's Noonmati area. The 19-year-old son was rescued and is undergoing treatment.

Three members of a family were killed when a landslide struck their home in Guwahati's Noonmati area on Tuesday morning. The incident occurred around 8 am in the Mathgharia locality, where a portion of a hill collapsed onto the house, burying the occupants under the debris.

The deceased have been identified as Nagen Rajbongshi (44), his wife Sanu Rajbongshi (38), and their 12-year-old daughter, Meena Rajbongshi. Their 19-year-old son, Biplab Rajbongshi, was pulled out alive from the rubble and is currently receiving medical treatment, according to police.

A senior officer said the family was asleep at the time of the landslide. Rescue teams from the district disaster management department recovered the bodies and sent them to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for postmortem examination.

Local residents believe the landslide was triggered by the incessant rainfall that has lashed Guwahati since Monday night, with soil from the hilltop giving way onto the house below. The family, originally from the area, had been living there for several years, and the father worked as a daily-wage labourer.

Meanwhile, two other major landslides have been reported in the Amsing and Athgaon areas, with one fatality each suspected. Authorities have not yet confirmed these reports. Several low-lying parts of Guwahati remain submerged due to the continuous heavy rain.
