Assam Man Killed Wife, Kept Severed Head in Fridge; Arrested
A Guwahati man arrested for killing his wife and keeping her severed head in a fridge has urged the public not to repeat his mistake.
A man accused of murdering his wife and keeping her severed head in a refrigerator in Guwahati has told reporters that others should not repeat what he did. Ramanuj Goswami, arrested on September 4, spoke while police were taking him for a medical checkup.
"I am accepting my faults. People can say bad things about me. But I request everyone not to make this kind of mistake in their life," he said.
The remarks marked a shift from his earlier aggressive statements, in which he spoke of "killing" a "sugar daddy" after coming out of jail and told reporters he had "no regrets" and would not apologise.
Goswami is accused of killing his wife, Riya Talukdar, 25, following an argument. The couple had married only a few months earlier. Investigators said he used a sharp weapon to kill her and then severed her head. He is also accused of trying to cut up the body and mutilating her face with scissors.
The case came to light on September 6, when neighbours complained of a foul smell from the couple's apartment. Residents told police they had not seen the newly married couple for two days and that both their mobile phones were switched off.
Police broke open the lock and found the woman's body inside. Her fingers had been partially chopped, the body had begun to decompose and the head was missing, investigators said.
On Tuesday, police took Goswami to the crime scene along with a magistrate. They have seized the fridge in which the severed head was kept, along with a knife, scissors, clothes and other evidence.
Police are questioning him to establish a motive and reconstruct the sequence of events. The identity of the person he referred to as a "sugar daddy" and the circumstances of that remark are also part of the investigation.
