In a pre-dawn operation on Monday, September 7, 2026, troops of the 21 Sector Assam Rifles apprehended two men from Bihar in a sensitive area of Agartala, seizing firearms and ammunition from their possession. The suspects, identified as Suraj Kumar (30) and Srikant Kumar (36), were detained near the entrance gate of the BSF headquarters in the Shalbagan locality, which also houses the Military Station and offices of the CRPF.
According to officials, the arrests were made by personnel of the 35 Battalion Assam Rifles, who recovered two pistols, three magazines, and eight rounds of ammunition from the duo. Preliminary inquiries suggest that the two men had travelled from Khowai in west Tripura to Agartala with the intention of handing over the weapons to an unidentified recipient.
The incident has heightened security concerns as it comes just weeks before the scheduled elections for village committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), slated for September 28. The proximity of the recovery to key security installations has prompted a multi-agency investigation.
The arrested individuals have been handed over to the police and are currently being interrogated at the NCC police station in Agartala. Authorities are working to trace the origin of the weapons, ascertain their intended use, and dismantle any potential arms supply network operating in the region.
