Assam Rifles Jawan Killed in Ambush Near India-Myanmar Border in Arunachal
An Assam Rifles patrol was ambushed near the India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh's Changlang district, killing one jawan and injuring four others.
A soldier of the Assam Rifles was killed and four others were injured when a patrol team came under fire in Arunachal Pradesh's Changlang district on Tuesday morning, officials said. The incident occurred along the India-Myanmar border, an area that has remained sensitive because of the movement of insurgent groups.
The ambush took place around 6.30 am near Nampong Nallah, where personnel of the 21 Assam Rifles were patrolling a stretch close to ongoing border fencing work. Preliminary reports indicate that suspected militants opened fire on the team, killing Havildar Jankhokai Kuki, aged 42, and wounding four others.
The injured personnel were evacuated for medical treatment. There was no immediate word on their condition.
Following the attack, security operations in the area were stepped up. Preliminary inputs pointed to the involvement of NSCN (K-YA) militants, though there has been no official confirmation of the attackers' identity. A formal statement from the Assam Rifles was awaited.
Changlang Superintendent of Police Kirli Padu said information about the incident had been received and the officer-in-charge of the Changlang police station had been asked to gather details.
The border stretch in Changlang district has long been regarded as vulnerable, given the presence and cross-border movement of insurgent outfits operating in the region.
