Five Assam Travellers Safe After Nepal Flash Flood; 11 Still Missing
Five of 16 Assam residents missing after Nepal's flash flood are safe. Eleven, including a retired professor, remain untraced.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said on Saturday that five of the 16 people from the state reported missing after the devastating flash flood in Nepal are safe. The remaining 11 are still untraced.
The confirmed safe individuals are Pankaj Barman and Samar Bezbaruah from Arora village in Nalbari district, and Shiva Marak, Sarbison Marak, and Elipson Sangma from Satgaon in West Karbi Anglong. Family members confirmed their safety.
Among the missing are a retired Gauhati University professor, her husband, and a doctor from Nalbari Medical College and Hospital. Dipali Sarkar, who retired as head of the Physics Department at Gauhati University, and her husband Manash Kumar Ghosh were part of a 32-member group travelling to Kailash-Manasarovar in Tibet. Their tour organiser lost contact with them after the disaster.
Other missing individuals include Arun Mahanta from Arora village, Birson Sangma from Satgaon, and three people from Daidak village in Karbi Anglong: Rhituopurno Brahma, Montri Basumatary, and Soneswar Narzary. Also missing are Rahul Daimary from Golaghat, Shatadal Nath from Hojai, and Tirtha Chaliha, a doctor from Ghograpar in Nalbari. Pankaj Naug from Guwahati's Rukminigaon locality is also on the list.
The flash flood struck Rasuwagadhi in northern Nepal at around 8:35 pm IST on August 26. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said efforts are underway to establish contact with the missing people and ensure their safe rescue.
