Australian Parents Attend First Day of Trial in Sons' Mexico Killings

The parents of two Australian surfers who were killed in Mexico have attended the opening day of the trial of three men accused of the murders. Debra and Martin Robinson were present in a courtroom in the port city of Ensenada, Baja California, for proceedings related to the deaths of their sons, Callum and Jake Robinson, alongside their American friend, Jack Carter Rhoad.

As the couple left the courthouse, they declined to comment on the day's proceedings. Martin Robinson briefly addressed reporters, stating, "We'd love to comment, but at the moment we can't. Sorry," before the couple departed in a van.

The three friends were on a surfing trip along Mexico's Pacific coast in April 2024 when they were attacked. The men, aged 33, 30, and 30, had been camping in a remote beachside area before they disappeared. Their bodies were discovered several days later in a cliff-top shaft, each having sustained gunshot wounds to the head.

Authorities have stated that the killings occurred during an attempted robbery of their pickup truck, which was later found burned near the bodies. In a related development last year, the girlfriend of one of the accused was sentenced to 20 years in prison after admitting to instigating the robbery to steal the truck's tires.

The deaths sparked significant outrage and grief in both Australia and the United States, where relatives and friends had launched a major social media search after the three men went missing.
