Auto retail sales pick up in August on festive demand, supply gains

Passenger vehicle and two-wheeler retail demand strengthened in August, aided by the Onam festival and improved supply chains.

India's automobile retail market showed broad-based momentum in August, with passenger vehicles (PV) and two-wheelers (2W) leading the charge ahead of the main festive season. Industry checks suggest PV retail growth is likely to exceed 9-10 per cent year-on-year, supported by a low base from the same period last year when buyers deferred purchases ahead of GST 2.0 implementation.

Demand was particularly strong in Kerala, where Onam-related sales grew by over 20 per cent year-on-year. The southern region also outperformed other zones in the two-wheeler segment, which registered an estimated 18-20 per cent retail growth during the month. Organic inquiries across India rose 10-12 per cent, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are ramping up dispatches to build inventory for upcoming festivals.

Within the PV segment, SUVs and alternate fuel powertrains — especially CNG and electric vehicles (EVs) — continue to drive volume additions. Dealership checks indicate a sustained spurt in CNG and EV demand, with inquiries and bookings rising over 30 per cent, helped by new launches and concerns around E20 fuel. Some OEMs are seeing waiting periods stretch to 3-4 months for popular models.

The commercial vehicle (CV) segment also showed steady improvement, with medium and heavy commercial vehicles posting double-digit retail growth of 14-16 per cent year-on-year. This was driven by small fleet operators and replacement cycles. An impending restriction on BS4 commercial vehicles entering the National Capital Region from November 2026 is expected to further boost replacement demand in the second half of the financial year.
