Avengers: Endgame Encore Alters Iconic Ending, Teases Doctor Doom

Marvel's 2019 blockbuster Avengers: Endgame has returned to cinemas with additional footage under the title Avengers: Endgame Encore, aiming to bridge the gap to the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. The re-release opened on Friday, September 25, drawing packed early-morning crowds, including at an IMAX theatre in South Mumbai where audiences responded with cheers and chants.

Before the film, Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans appear in a video greeting, thanking viewers for returning to the big screen and signing off with "We love you 3000." The gesture set the tone for a screening that saw fans applaud iconic moments, particularly the "Avengers... Assemble" line.

A reworked ending

The most significant change comes at the film's conclusion. The original ending showed Steve Rogers dancing with Peggy Carter. In Encore, their dance is interrupted by a knock at the door. Peggy opens it to find Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who says, "No. But I believe I can help both of you." Steve is stunned by the appearance of his former adversary. This alteration transforms the film's emotional close into a direct lead-in to Doomsday, raising questions about Loki's purpose and how Steve's life in the past connects to the coming multiversal crisis.

Three credit scenes

The first credit sequence follows Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) in an underground military bunker, where he is working on a gamma-suppression technique. After a power fluctuation, a familiar voice—Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr—announces he has come to "collect" Banner. Banner begins to transform, roars, and then disappears, leaving only a glowing green sigil.

The second scene returns to the Time Variance Authority, where Mobius (Owen Wilson), O B (Ke Huy Quan) and Casey (Eugene Cordero) discover that Earth-10005 and Earth-1127 are on a collision course and firing missiles at each other. Alarms multiply as thousands of universes face similar incursions. O B declares, "The multiverse is collapsing!"

The final scene revisits the original film's post-credits audio callback—the sound of metal being hammered. This time, visuals accompany it: shadowy glimpses of a figure forging a mask, revealed to be Victor Von Doom. The sequence recontextualizes the callback as the beginning of Doom's story, with Downey Jr playing both Tony Stark and Doom.

Avengers: Endgame Encore is now in theatres, with expectations of strong box-office performance ahead of Avengers: Doomsday's release on December 18.
