Bagalkot district in-charge Minister Vijayanand Kashappanavar has said that villages identified as vulnerable to recurring floods will be permanently shifted to safer locations. The announcement comes amid the district grappling with both flood risks and drought-like conditions.
Speaking in Bagalkot, the Minister stated that the administration has drawn up plans to relocate such habitations rather than undertaking temporary evacuation measures each year. He did not specify the number of villages affected or the timeline for the relocation process.
In a related development, Kashappanavar said he has formally requested Chief Minister to visit the district to assess the ground situation arising from drought. The Minister noted that the Chief Minister is expected to tour Bagalkot on September 4, 2026, to study the conditions and address the demands put forward by affected families.
The Minister's remarks underline the district's dual vulnerability — seasonal flooding in certain riverine pockets and water scarcity in other parts. Officials are expected to prepare a detailed proposal for the permanent resettlement of flood-prone villages, which would require land acquisition and rehabilitation planning.
