Baghdad Brigadier General Killed in Shooting During Illegal Housing Demolition

An Iraqi brigadier general was killed and five others wounded in a shooting during an illegal housing demolition operation in Baghdad's Dora district.

A senior Iraqi army officer was killed and five other people were wounded on Thursday when gunmen opened fire on a team carrying out a demolition operation in Baghdad, according to Iraqi security officials and state media.

The attack occurred in the southern district of Dora, where military personnel and municipal workers had gathered to remove illegally constructed housing structures. The deceased officer was identified as an army brigadier general. Among the wounded were a police officer and four municipal workers.

Security forces cordoned off the area following the attack, and the Baghdad Operations Commander arrived at the scene to oversee the situation, a security official said on condition of anonymity.

The state news agency confirmed the brigadier general's death and reported that several municipal workers were also wounded. It added that the municipality had acted on legal orders to clear the unauthorized structures.

Dora, a neighborhood with large agricultural tracts, has seen recurring instances of illegal construction, making such enforcement operations a sensitive and sometimes dangerous task for authorities.
