Baguio Landslide: Five Dead, Five Missing After Monsoon Rains
A landslide in Baguio city killed five and left five missing. Rescue teams recovered bodies Monday after days of heavy monsoon rain.
Rescue teams in the northern Philippine mountain resort city of Baguio recovered bodies on Monday from a landslide that buried three houses, bringing the death toll from the incident to five, with at least five others still missing.
Officials said three people were pulled out alive from the mud and debris and were taken to a hospital for treatment. The landslide struck after days of torrential monsoon rains that have triggered widespread flooding and landslides across the northern Philippines.
The latest deaths push the overall toll from nearly a week of severe weather — including a tropical storm that hit the northern Luzon region last week — to 15, according to the government's Office of Civil Defense.
More than a million people have been affected by the heavy rains and floods, with approximately 98,000 displaced from their homes. Of those, about 58,000 have sought shelter in 642 government-run evacuation centers, said Laurence Mina of the Office of Civil Defense.
Rescue operations continued as teams dug through the mud in search of the missing, with the region bracing for more rain.
