All 50 districts of Bangkok have been declared flood disaster areas after persistent heavy rain overwhelmed the city's drainage system, prompting a large-scale relief deployment.
Bangkok has declared all 50 of its districts flood disaster areas, with the city's disaster prevention and mitigation command issuing the statement on Saturday under the signature of Governor Chadchart Sittipunt.
The declaration follows days of unrelenting heavy rain that has placed the Thai capital's drainage network under severe strain. Across the city, vehicles were seen navigating inundated roads while pedestrians waded through standing water, and in some locations cars were partially submerged.
Relief operations are already in motion. The Ministry of Defence has deployed more than 10,000 troops along with over 1,000 vehicles and pieces of equipment to assist affected communities. The personnel are tasked with evacuating residents, delivering supplies and reinforcing flood-control infrastructure. Several military facilities have been opened as temporary shelters.
Schools in flood-hit areas may suspend classes or modify their teaching schedules in line with local conditions.
The Thai Meteorological Department attributed the prolonged rainfall to an interaction between a low-pressure system and the monsoon trough. Conditions in Bangkok are expected to ease on Sunday, and authorities are intensifying drainage work, with water levels in some areas projected to recede within one or two days.
